What Sets Function Thru Fitness Apart From Other Gyms?- A Perspective From Newly Hired Personal Trainer Billy Jo

By: Billy Jo Collette

Function Thru Fitness has a unique way of training their clients with each personal training session by molding the session perfectly to fit their clients needs. I’m Billy Jo Collette, a newly employed Personal Trainer at Function Thru Fitness.

Going through training and learning from the professionals at Function Thru Fitness has been inspiring, exciting, and has allowed me to learn and practice so much in a short time span.

As an applicant to this position, Function Thru Fitness set themselves apart from other gyms hiring for personal training positions because of the care that they showed about training their employees correctly and thoroughly.

After the initial interview and before officially being hired, I was asked to come in for a few hours to shadow Mike, co-founder and lead trainer at Function Thru Fitness.

During this time, Mike pointed out exactly what form and alignment he was looking for in the clients with each exercise, and explained to me the purpose of each exercise in their routine.

Many clients coming to Function Thru Fitness are working on some form of rehabilitation post surgery or injury. The in depth assessments that our trainers perform allows us to pinpoint exactly what areas of the body and muscles we need to focus on when training.

This helps to help improve the healing process for each client.

Not many gyms invite each of their applicants into their business environment to shadow their day-to-day routine and meet some of their clients as part of their hiring process.

To me, this showed great respect to the applicant and the abundance of care that Function Thru Fitness has for the quality of the training being produced by the business.

Shadowing allowed each applicant to not only see Function Thru Fitness’s approach to training clients, but allowed the employees to watch us and how we composed and interacted with clients.

About a week after my shadowing experience I was privileged enough to hear back from Glen, the owner of Function Thru Fitness, that myself and one other applicant (Jake) will be splitting their need for a full time trainer as we both finish up our college degrees.

Jake, has completed his undergraduate education at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay, achieving a degree in Human Biology with an emphasis in Exercise Science and is now pursuing his Physical Therapy schooling.

I am also attending the University of Wisconsin Green Bay, Majoring in Human biology with a double emphasis in Exercise Science and Dietetics, as well as a minor in dance and will be graduating this coming December of 2022.

As I began my first day of work, the employees and clients were welcoming, and fun. Glen and Mike had a training schedule for Jake and I to follow and learn from. The first week as a newly hired trainer was structured to be much like the day of shadowing I had done prior to getting hired, to allow me to get to know the gym, equipment, training techniques, and clients.

During my second week of training, I began to help run workouts that Mike wrote for his clients. This section of the training helped me in understanding exact exercise form, how to explain to clients what their muscles are doing with each movement, and how each exercise benefits their body.

Toward the end of this week, I was also introduced to the posture and alignment assessments that are performed on the first day with new clients. Understanding how to complete each assessment and seeing all of the information that a trainer can gain and apply to the clients workouts from these assessments was an informative and helpful experience.

With time, I can now more easily see the tightness and muscle imbalances in clients by simply looking at how they move. Ensuring that each personal trainer knows how to run each assessment properly and can apply the findings to the client’s workouts correctly is a quality that Function Thru Fitness does to set their trainers apart from those at other businesses.

Lastly, the third week of training transitioned me into writing the workouts for Mike and John's clients.

Writing the workouts and running the sessions helped me to understand the order in which muscle groups should be worked and how to improvise easily if a client comes in with some sort of pain and was not able to complete exactly what I had planned.

It was also very helpful to learn from multiple trainers because each individual has different ways of explaining exercises and concepts to clients.

Even when a concept is the same, different trainers can explain things in a new way that may help clients understand more effectively.

All trainers have their own style and I appreciated getting to know each trainer's “trainer personality” when working with them; which made me feel more comfortable adding a bit of my own uniqueness to my sessions.

Overall, the attentiveness to detail, knowledgeable staff, and fun yet sincere and professional environment is what stands out to me most about Function Thru Fitness’s gym.

There is so much care toward the clients from each trainer and a lot of fun is had in each session. I love that function Thru Fitness works with such a wide range of clients and client goals of rehabilitation, injury, or general fitness.

It is just the beginning of my long term journey as a Personal Trainer with Function Thru Fitness and I am excited to share my passion for fitness and nutrition with our clients as I pursue this as my career.
