How To Create Attainable Goals

January 1st, new year, new goals. We’ve all been there and tried, only to see the ambition

fall to the wayside because the reality of life helps us create the reasons why we can’t focus on

ourselves. This year I’m going to lose 30 pounds by spring break or I just want to tone up my

arms. These are good goals, but sitting down with your goals and taking time to make them

defined is going to be key to your success.

When getting ready to set your goals up, here a few things to consider:

1. Who is going to be in your support group to encourage you? Who is going to hold you

accountable? Look around you and employ someone or a group that can relate to your

goals and move you forward. Coworkers, spouses, personal trainers or nutritionist,

somebody you can check in with frequently is very important versus going at your goal

alone.

2. Use the S.M.AR.T. objectives when writing your goals:

-Specific goals helps you define your goals clearly. The goals are understood by everyone

reading and there is a timeline associated with your goal.

-Measurable goals include how your progress will be measured. Set up a daily, weekly and

monthly goal to keep you on track.

- Achievable goals are realistic goals set up within a realistic timeframe to help you set up

for success.

- Relevant goals need to make sense to fit your purpose. The sub-goals need to support

your ultimate goal and vision.

-Time-bound goals can be date markers for when you’d like to have achieved your ultimate

goal and your sub-goals.

3. Next, you want your environment to support your goals. For example, you want to lose

weight, but every time you start this journey, you don’t have the support within your own

household. Sit down with your family and tell them what your plans and goals are and that you

would like their help as well. You will need help meal planning, grocery shopping, meal

prepping, and getting rid of some foods that reside in your refrigerator and pantry that you

know aren’t good for you. Some of the benefits to getting your family on board is you will be

teaching them good habits of cooking and eating, you’ll get to spend some quality time

together and get to know each other better, and you’ll all get to see the results of the hard work

that was invested.

4. Last, a few tips and tricks to set up for your journey:

- Sit down with a weekly calendar and time block your week. What time to you see yourself

working out, doing yoga, having a rest day etc... What day do you want to meal plan, shop,

and meal prep. Leave it out for the family to see so they can be aware of what you want to

accomplish and how they can be apart of your goals and assist you. Also, have some grace on

yourself if something disrupts your timing. It’s ok to be fluid.

- Set yourself up with daily affirmations and positive reminds around the environment.

Mindset is key. You’re going to have your up and down days, so again have grace on yourself,

and be fluid. Keep your eye on your goals, but have your reminders and support systems close

to keep moving you forward.

- Join a group workout setting and find out what type to workout style you like, or join a

cooking class to learn new ways to cook for yourself or your family. Have fun with what you’re

doing!

There’s no telling what you can do when you believe in them. And there’s

no telling what will happen when you act upon them.” Jim Rohn
